Jos Buttler has stepped down as England’s white-ball captain after their early exit from the Champions Trophy. He announced on Friday that he will lead the team one last time against South Africa in Karachi.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Buttler said, “I’m going to stand down as England captain. It’s the right decision for me and the team.” He hopes a new leader, alongside coach Brendon McCullum, can take England forward.

Despite stepping down as captain, Buttler will continue playing for England. He admitted feeling “sadness and disappointment” but looks forward to enjoying his cricket again.

Buttler took over from Eoin Morgan in June 2022 and led England to victory in the T20 World Cup later that year. However, England’s form has declined since then, with poor performances in three consecutive ICC tournaments the 2023 ODI World Cup, the 2024 T20 World Cup, and the 2025 Champions Trophy.

Jos Buttler has a record of 44 matches as a captain in which he won 18 matches and lost 25 matches. After England’s narrow loss to Afghanistan, Buttler hinted at his resignation, saying he needed to assess whether he was “part of the problem or the solution.”

England’s white-ball struggles, including losing 18 of their last 25 ODIs, added pressure on his leadership. Their Champions Trophy campaign ended with just one win in the group stage.
