Oiling your hair is an age old tradition in india. We have grown up seeing our mothers and grandmothers passing down the benefits of oiling your hair for nourishment and hair growth. And then comes in the famous ‘Champi’ that also relaxes you along with the scalp massage. But should you oil your hair every single day? Amit Thakur, celebrity hairstylist who often works with Nita Ambani, Priyanka Chopra Alia Bhatt & many such actors gives in his bit on his social media account.
How oiling helps?
In an Instagram video titled, “Does oiling help?”, Amit explains that the benefits of oiling might be a little overrated and also explains how oiling your hair truly works. “Oiling your hair is a tradition many swear by, and yes, it has its benefits. But let’s not overpromise; it’s amazing for conditioning and protection, but it can’t magically fix damage or stop hair from falling on its own,” he captioned the clip.
The video starts with Amit discussing the common belief that oiling hair can help reduce damage, prevent hair fall, and promote hair growth. However, he then questions whether these claims are entirely true. While oiling has been a traditional practice in many cultures for centuries, Amit argues that its ability to ‘reverse hair damage’ is quite limited.
While oiling can be beneficial as a pre-wash treatment, particularly for protecting the hair from mid-length to ends, its ability to solely promote hair growth or prevent hair fall remains scientifically uncertain. Additionally, oiling can enhance the overall appearance and texture of hair, but it shouldn’t be considered a standalone solution for hair concerns.
Amit emphasised that various factors contribute to hair-related issues, stating, “So many other factors that can contribute to your hair-related issues like diet, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalance and also your individual lifestyle habits.”
He ultimately advised against relying solely on oiling to resolve hair problems. Instead, he urged individuals to seek medical help if they notice their hair issues becoming severe.
