Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi has filed an important petition in Pune’s Special MP/MLA court in the defamation case related to freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar. He has sought to convert the ‘Sumri Trial’ against him into ‘Saman Saman Trial’, so that he can present historical facts and evidence in court.

However, Savarkar’s family has strongly opposed this demand, causing the matter to be further heated. Savarkar’s relative Satyaki Ashok Savarkar has appealed to the court to dismiss Rahul Gandhi’s plea.

What is the matter?

During a speech in London in March 2023, Rahul Gandhi had mentioned an incident related to Savarkar, alleging that Savarkar had described the attack on a Muslim man as “enjoyable”. Satyaki Savarkar filed a defamation suit against Rahul Gandhi against this statement.

Now, Rahul Gandhi wants the matter to go on as a summons trial, so that he can bring historical evidence about Savarkar on record. But Satyaki Savarkar called it “an attempt to deviate the issue”.

Satyaki Savarkar’s opposition

Satyaki Savarkar said in the court through his lawyer SA Kolhatkar that:

“Rahul Gandhi is trying to deliberately pull the matter long. He is trying to change the subject under the guise of historical facts, while it is a direct defamation case. ”

He also cited the first cases registered against him, accusing Rahul Gandhi of “a tendency to defamation”, which included his conviction in Gujarat, temporarily canceled his Lok Sabha membership.

Permanent exemption from court appearance

Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi has got permanent exemption from appearing in court. The Pune special court has given relief from his ‘Z-Plus’ security and busy schedule, and he has been relieved from appearing in person. Earlier, the court also granted him bail.

What next?

The next hearing will be held on March 19, where the court will decide whether Rahul Gandhi’s petition will be accepted or not. Satyaki Savarkar’s lawyer has appealed to the court to complete the hearing as soon as possible.

Now it will be interesting to see what stance the court takes in this case and whether Rahul Gandhi’s demand to present historical facts is accepted.
