Mizoram has the highest number of HIV infection in India. The HIV infection rate in the state has reached 2.73 percent, which is much higher than the national average of 0.2 percent. According to a report released on Monday, 32,287 HIV positive cases have been reported in Mizoram so far, out of which 5,511 people have died. In addition, between April 2024 to January 2025, 1,769 new cases of HIV were reported in the state.

What is HIV?

HIV (Human immunodeficiency virus) is a dangerous virus that weakens the body’s immune system. The HIV positive person may have AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), which is a lifelong disease that has no cure.

How does HIV spread?

HIV infection is mainly spread through body fluids such as semen, blood, vaginal discharge and breast milk. This especially during sexual relations, by using shares of needles, or spreading through the baby’s birth and breastfeeding.

HIV infection in Mizoram is growing rapidly

The increase in HIV infection rate in Mizoram has put the state government in serious concern. Health Minister Lalrinpui said about the critical situation that the rate of HIV infection in Mizoram is much higher than the national average and immediate steps need to be taken to control it. The state government and the health department have also resolved that better facilities will be provided for the treatment and care of HIV infected people in the coming days.
