The festival of Mahashivaratri is celebrated on the Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month. On this day Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati had a holy marriage. This night is considered very auspicious for the worship of Lord Shiva because the worship performed on this day is particularly fruitful. On this day, offering water, milk, belpatra, dhatura, cannabis, akshat etc. on the Shivling has special significance.
According to Shivpuran, worshiping Lord Shiva on the day of Mahashivaratri destroys all sins and the person attains salvation. The measures taken on this day give quick results and the person’s fate can shine. Mahashivaratri is a major festival of Hinduism which is celebrated to commemorate the marriage of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. This day has special significance for Shankar devotees because worshiping Bholenath on this day gives special fruits. If some special measures are taken on this auspicious occasion, then a person can achieve immense wealth, happiness, prosperity and success. It is said in the scriptures that some special things taken from Shivling on Mahashivaratri can change the fate of a person in one night.

How to take the bell?

Worshiping Lord Shiva is considered incomplete without Belpatra. After Abhishek, Lord Shiva should offer a bell leaf. Vidarbha has a tradition of carrying cannabis leaves, dhotriya leaves/fruits and snail flowers with Belpatra. It is a practice of offering blue lotus to Lord Shiva on Mahashivaratri in South India. Similarly, it is said that during Shiva worship, Shiva Shankar is offered Ashoka leaves, Amla leaves, Kanheri leaves, Kadamb leaves, Brahmi leaves and Aghdha leaves. While offering bells on the Shivling on the day of Mahashivaratri, keep in mind that there are three leaves in the bell and then offer it to the Shivling. The number of bells should not be less than three or more than three. It should not be torn or damaged while offering Belpatra. Three pages should be completely unbroken.
Belpatra is very dear to Lord Shiva and placing it on Shivling has special significance. It is said in the scriptures that if a devotee offers a bell -leaf on the Shivling with a true heart on the day of Mahashivaratri and after the end of the worship, he picks up the bell -leaf and keeps it with him, then it can improve his financial condition.

What to do?

On Mahashivaratri, devotees should get up early in the morning and take a bath and wear clean clothes. On this day, devotees fast, while some people do not even drink water throughout the day. You can eat fruits throughout the day during fasting. But after sunset you should avoid eating any food.
People go to the nearest temple for worship or if they have Shivling in their house, they worship it. It is said that Lord Shiva likes milk and milk products very much, so it is appropriate to bathe Shivling with milk or curd.
Mantras are often chanting during Mahashivaratri. The most famous mantra is ‘Om Namah Shivaya’, in which you pray for meeting with Lord Shiva of your soul.

what not to do?

Stay away from tamasic foods like onion, garlic, meat, alcohol etc. Devotees observing fast should avoid food made from rice, pulses and wheat. Coconut water should not be offered on Shivling during worship. Avoid applying vermilion during worship. Lord Shiva should not forget to offer basil leaves. Avoid speaking bad about someone. Do not insult the elders. Avoid offering turmeric.
