Indore (Madhya Pradesh): With summer approaching, the supply of seasonal fruits has peaked at Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Fruit and Vegetable Market (Choithram Mandi), and watermelon is the cheapest fruit of the season. Due to a large supply from Maharashtra’s Dhule, Shirpur, Malegaon, Jalgaon, Aurangabad, and Shirdi, watermelon prices have dropped to as low as Rs 6 to Rs 12 per kg in the wholesale market.
Traders in Choithram Mandi report that the daily supply of watermelon is between 80 to 100 tonnes, ensuring ample stock and competitive prices. According to fruit trader Nitin Sahu, “The large supply has significantly brought down watermelon prices, making it affordable for all. With the upcoming festivals like Mahashivratri and Ramzan, we expect a surge in demand, which could stabilize or slightly increase the rates.”
Ramzan and Maha Shivratri to boost fruit sales
Traders are optimistic that Ramzan and Mahashivratri will drive higher fruit sales. Watermelon, known for its high water content and cooling properties, is a popular fruit during these festivals. Similarly, muskmelon, another hydrating fruit, is arriving in quantities of 15-20 tonnes daily and is priced at Rs 20 to Rs 30 per kg. Meanwhile, pomegranates, supplied from Rajasthan’s Jeewani Mandi and Gujarat’s Kutch, are selling at Rs 130 to Rs 140 per kg in wholesale, with top quality varieties being sold at Rs 200 per kg.
More supply expected, prices may drop further
With the rising temperatures, the demand for summer fruits is increasing and traders expect an even higher supply in the coming days, which could stabilize or lower the prices.
