The fast of Mahashivaratri is observed on the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha of Phalgun month. It is believed that the marriage of Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati was concluded on this day. Devotees fast and worship on this day to please Bholenath. Some people observe fasting on this occasion, while some take food. If you are also going to fast, then it is important to know what things should be avoided and what can be eaten in the fast.

Do not forget to eat these things during Mahashivaratri fast

Consuming some foods is prohibited during fasting. If you are fasting for the first time, avoid eating these things –

  • Eggs and non -vegetarians – Consumption of meat, fish and eggs is considered taboo in fast.
  • Alcohol and tobacco – Things like alcohol, gutkha, paan, betel nut, tobacco are consumed against the rules of fasting.
  • Salt – White salt and black salt should not be used. Use only rock salt during the fast.
  • Garlic and onion – They fall under the category of tamasic food, so they are not consumed during the fast.
  • Pulses and grains-Avoid grains of wheat, rice, maize, millet etc. along with pulses like arhar, lentils, gram, Rajma.
  • Vegetables like radish, cabbage should not be eaten in fast.
  • Refined and mustard oil – Use traditional ghee or coconut oil in fast.

What can you eat during Mahashivaratri fast?

If you are observing the fruitful fast, then you can consume these things –

  • Singhada, Kuttu and Sama Rice – All these are considered fasting grains and can be eaten by puri, paratha or khichdi made from them.
  • Sabudana – You can eat sabudana khichdi, kheer or dumplings and eat it.
  • Rock salt – Use rock salt instead of white salt.
  • Fruits and some special vegetables – light vegetables like sweet potato, pumpkin, gourd, potatoes can be eaten.
  • Milk and milk items – milk, curd, makhana, cheese, buttermilk etc. can be consumed.

Keep these things in mind once in the fast

If you eat food at one time during the fast of Mahashivaratri, then note that-

  • Only eat satvic food, which does not contain garlic and onion.
  • Use rock salt only in food.
  • Food should be light and digestible, so that energy is maintained.
