Mumbai: The Charkop police have registered two FIRs in connection with illegal eviction incidents. Twelve individuals linked to the Kora Kendra trust have been accused of rioting and the illegal eviction of 30 families in Charkop. This action comes after strong criticism from the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC), which reprimanded the authorities for failing to address the grievances of the affected families.

According to the FIR, the complainant, Vijaya Anajipuram, 37, a homemaker, resides in Sai Charan Welfare Society, near Jalaram Temple, Charkop, Kandivali West. On June 13, 2024, at around 8:30 am, approximately nine women arrived near the Jalaram Temple area, where several huts were located.

They demolished the huts, damaged household equipment, and threatened the residents, verbally abusing them and ordering them to vacate their homes. The assailants reportedly told the victims that they had been sent by Tiwari and Haider Rizwan to carry out the eviction.

On June 19, 2024, at 8:30 am, around twelve women returned to the area and once again demolished huts. When the victims dialled 100 for help, the accused became aggressive and attempted to attack them.

According to the complainant, the women were associated with Kora Kendra. She further claimed that Kora Kendra’s trustees were involved in the attack and demanded action against them.

The victims approached the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC), which led to the police filing the cases. Anajipuram stated, “First, the collector’s office demolished our houses, and then the Kora Kendra people destroyed them again. My house was also demolished. We then approached the Human Rights Commission and subsequently moved to court.”

The eviction, deemed unlawful, left several residents homeless and raised serious concerns about the lack of due process. The SHRC had previously questioned the inaction of government agencies and demanded accountability from responsible officials.

Additionally, a writ petition seeking the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the matter is currently pending before the Bombay High Court. The petition stresses the need for an independent and transparent investigation to ensure justice for the displaced families.

The accused have been identified as Kiran Yadav, Tambali Chauhan, Mahesh Gupta, Sangita Gautam, Rusum Chauhan, Chandrakala Yadav, Rakesh Yadav, Kalicharan Yadav, and Shitaladevi Kanojia. The case has been filed under sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 427 (mischief causing damage), 448 (house trespass), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. Both FIRs were filed on February 19.
