Rail services between India-Bangladesh were suspended for the last 9 months due to political upheaval and violence in Bangladesh. But now the freight train service between the two countries has started again.
On Thursday, the first freight train from India reached Birol railway station in Dinajpur district of Bangladesh. Bangladesh Railway has confirmed this news.
Rail service started again from birol border
The first freight train reached Bangladesh via Birol border at 10:30 pm on Thursday night.
The train left from Radhikapur station in North Dinajpur district of West Bengal.
After removing goods in Bangladesh, this train will return to India from this route.
India temporarily stopped passenger trains and freight train services after violence erupted in Bangladesh in July last year. However, still passenger train services have not started.
Passenger trains still shut down
Many important passenger trains used to run between India and Bangladesh, which are still closed:
Maitri Express: Train from Dhaka to Kolkata, which was canceled due to violence.
Bandhan Express: This train running two days a week has not started yet.
Mithali Express: This train running between Dhaka to Jalpaiguri is also suspended till further orders.
Why did the situation deteriorate in Bangladesh?
The first student movement started against the Sheikh Hasina government, which later became a political movement.
The violence increased so much that Sheikh Hasina had to resign, and India gave him shelter.
This was followed by a coup in Bangladesh and Mohammad Yunus was appointed as the Chief Advisor to the Interim Government.
After the formation of the new government, attacks on minorities intensified, and incidents of sabotage in temples were revealed.
Even now the situation in Bangladesh has not been completely normal.
Will passenger trains start soon?
Efforts are on to bring business activities back on track between India and Bangladesh. But the restoration of passenger trains remains uncertain at the moment.
