The suspense of 11 days in Delhi for the new Chief Minister finally ended on Wednesday. Rekha Gupta, who became an MLA from Shalimar Bagh for the first time, has been unanimously elected as a leader in the BJP Legislature Party meeting. Rekha Gupta was proposed by BJP MLAs Pravesh Verma, Vijendra Gupta and Satish Upadhyay, while Rajkumar Chauhan, Ashish Sood and Manjinder Singh Sirsa approved their proposal. In this way, in the name of Rekha Gupta, the post of Chief Minister was approved and now the reins of Delhi’s power will be in her hands. After Sushma-Shaila-Atishi, Rekha’s government will now be formed in Delhi.
Prior to Rekha Gupta, Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dixit and Atishi have been women chief ministers.
Rekha Gupta will be the 9th Chief Minister of Delhi and the fourth woman of Delhi. Prior to Rekha Gupta, Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dixit and Atishi have been women chief ministers. The BJP has once again expressed confidence in women power, but the question arises as to why Congress, Aam Aadmi Party and BJP like women Chief Minister in Delhi.
Sushma-Shaila-Atishi and now Rekha Sarkar
In the political history of Delhi, the reins of power have been in the hands of women for a long time. Assembly elections were held for the first time in 1993 after the restoration of the Legislative Assembly in the Union Territory of Delhi. The BJP came to power with an overwhelming majority and Madan Lal Khurana became the Chief Minister. Khurana could remain the Chief Minister for only three years and Sahib Singh Verma was replaced as the Chief Minister, but in the fight for political supremacy, he left the Chief Minister’s chair before the 1998 assembly elections.
After the withdrawal of Sahib Singh Verma from the post of Chief Minister, the BJP handed over the reins of power to Sushma Swaraj.
After the withdrawal of Sahib Singh Verma from the post of Chief Minister, the BJP handed over the reins of power to Sushma Swaraj. On 12 October 1998, Sushma Swaraj was sworn in as the first woman Chief Minister of Delhi. However, when the assembly elections were held after two months, the BJP suffered a crushing defeat and the Congress managed to return to power. The BJP suffered heavy losses due to onion inflation.
The Sheela government ruled Delhi for 15 years.
In the 1998 assembly elections, the Congress formed the government with an absolute majority and Sheila Dixit became the Chief Minister of Delhi. Sheila Dixit became the second woman Chief Minister of Delhi. After this, the Congress ruled Delhi for 15 consecutive years and during this time the reins of power remained in the hands of Sheila Dixit. The Congress fought the 1998, 2003 and 2008 assembly elections under the leadership of Sheila Dixit and managed to win. The Congress won both these elections due to the development works, metro projects and the working class in the industrial sector during the Sheela government.
Atishi handled Kejriwal’s legacy
The Aam Aadmi Party, which emerged from the Anna movement, ruled Delhi for 11 years. In 2013, Kejriwal became the CM of Delhi with the support of the Congress, but then in the 2015 and 2020 elections, the Aam Aadmi Party led by Arvind Kejriwal made a huge majority and created new history. During this time Arvind Kejriwal took over the reins of Delhi’s power, but his political popularity declined rapidly after the so -called liquor scam was jailed. This was the reason that after being released from jail, Arvind Kejriwal resigned as Chief Minister on 17 September 2024 and handed over his political legacy to Atishi. Atishi became the third woman Chief Minister of Delhi. Atishi remained on the CM’s chair of Delhi for 152 days.
Rekha Gupta’s government in Delhi from now
The BJP won the 2025 assembly elections by an overwhelming majority. Thus, when the BJP returned to power in Delhi after 27 years, the party handed over the reins of power to Rekha Gupta from student politics. Rekha Gupta has been elected MLA from Shalimar Bagh for the first time, but she has been a councilor three times and has been the General Secretary of DU Students Union. Even after losing the assembly elections twice from Shalimar Bagh, the BJP expressed confidence in Rekha Gupta and fielded her for the third time. This time she stood up to the party’s expectations and was elected MLA and her luck also shone.
