West Bengal courts have sentenced seven convicts to death sentence in the last six months. Six of these cases are related to the rape and murder of minor girls, which the court put up the category of ‘rare’ crimes. In addition, a person has been sentenced to death in the crime of killing his own family members.

In all these cases, the culprits were booked under the Indian Penal Code (IPC), later the Indian Justice Code (BNS), and the Poxo Act.

However, Sanjay Roy, accused in the RG tax hospital rape and murder case, did not get the death penalty. The court sentenced him to life imprisonment.

Similarly, the case of suspected rape and murder of a 14 -year -old student in New Town area of ​​Kolkata was also not included in the list. The 22-year-old e-rickshaw driver has been arrested in the case, and the investigation is on.

Hanged sentence in West Bengal after two decades

The last judicial hanging in West Bengal was in 2004, when Dhananjay Chatterjee was hanged in Alipur Jail in the rape and murder of a 16 -year -old student.

Death sentence heard between September 2024 to February 2025

  • A Poxo court in Siliguri sentenced Mohammad Abbas to death on 7 September 2023. She was found guilty of rape and murder of a 16 -year -old girl going to school in Matigara area in August 2023.
  • In the rest of the cases, the culprits were punished harshly by prosecuting rapidly.

TMC government statement

The ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of the state supported these decisions and said that this is a proof of the readiness of the West Bengal Police. The party wrote on its official ‘X’ (East Twitter) handle:

“This quick punishment shows that the West Bengal Police ensured justice within a year. The implementation of ‘Aparajita Anti -Rape Bill’ will create fear among the rigorous decorating criminals and will help prevent such heinous crimes. ”
