Veteran actress and Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan lost her cool at the Parliament on Wednesday after another MP objected to her claim that Bollywood is the “highest tax paying industry” of India. She was seen shouting at the MP and questioning if they had any idea of how much income tax she paid every year.
A video from the Parliament has now gone viral in which Jaya can be seen tabling her concerns about the rising cost of watching a film at a theatre. “People don’t go to watch movies now because everything is so expensive. Do you want to finish this industry?” she asked.
“Please think about it. We are one of the highest tax-paying industries in the country,” she added, and while a few of her fellow party workers supported her, someone from the other side of the Parliament objected to her statement.
This did not go down well with the Abhimaan actress, who lashed out at the MP, and said, “Prove that we are not. Do you want to know what I pay for my income tax? Don’t talk out of turn! Bakwas karte hai aaplog!”
Kiran Choudhry, who was chairing the Parliament session, reprimanded Jaya for not using parliamentary language, post which the actress replied, “I am sorry for losing my cool, but this kind of rubbish I don’t want to accept!”
As the video went viral, netizens called Jaya’s demeanour in the Parliament unacceptable and many also tagged her as “arrogant” and “rude”.
It is to be noted that Jaya’s husband Amitabh Bachchan was one of the highest tax-paying celebrities of the country in 2024 as he paid a staggering income tax of Rs 71 crore.
