The Odisha High Court has made an important remarks in a case related to divorce, reducing the maintenance amount set by the Family Court. The court says that if the wife is educated and has a job experience, then she should not only sit at home for maintenance, but should also work himself.
Under this decision, the High Court reduced the maintenance amount given by the husband from Rs 8000 to Rs 5000 per month.
“It is not right to remain inactive just for maintenance”-High Court
Justice Gaurishankar Satpati said in her judgment:
“The law does not support wives who remain inactive only so that they can put the burden of maintenance on the husband. If a woman has high qualification and ability to work, but still she does not try for a job, it is not appropriate. ”
He further clarified that the purpose of Section 125 of CRPC is to provide relief to wives who are unable to take care of themselves and have no regular income.
Odisha Government’s big step: Marriage-Eastern Counseling Center and “Divorce Prevention Year 2025”
The Odisha government has decided to open a marriage-pre-counseling center in view of increasing divorce cases in the state.
- Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi took this decision on the suggestion of the National Commission for Women (NCW) Vijaya Rahatkar.
- State Deputy Chief Minister Prabhati Parida announced that Odisha would celebrate 2025 as “Divorce Prevention Year”.
Vijaya Rahatkar is on a two -day visit to Odisha and attended the 32nd Foundation Day celebrations of the Odisha State Women’s Commission. On this occasion, he also met the Chief Minister and suggested to control the increasing cases of divorce in the state.
