Air Pollution has been a concerning issue in Mumbai since the last few years. As the city keeps welcoming lakhs of people every single day, the climate and weather change has been harshly effective on residents. So much so that non-smokers are now getting diagnosed with lung cancer. The city breathes harmful particles through the polluted air which causes inflammation in the lungs and affects the respiratory system.
Popular lifestyle coach Luke Coutinho on Friday evening took to his X (formerly Twitter) account requesting the BMC and CM Fadnavis to take necessary actions against the air pollution in Mumbai. “The People of India, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation @mybmc, Respected Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Devendra Fadnavis ,@Dev_Fadnavis Hon. Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi @narendramodi, I am not an activist. I am not here to fight or tear anyone down. I am writing to you as a citizen of our country, a fellow Indian, with a basic yet fundamental right—the right to clean air. Every day, I see people around me in Mumbai getting sicker. I feel it in my own body too. The air we breathe is no longer just air—it is harming our lungs, our hearts, and our future. We cannot ignore this any longer,” he said.
No Giant Ferris Wheel, We need clean air
The fitness guru in the same post also emphasised on how the city needs to channel their funds towards something the city could use and how it does not need a giant ferris wheel but some clean air. This comes after BMC recently announced its plan to launch the ‘Mumbai Eye’ wheel that is similar to the London Eye.
“I appeal to every citizen of India, to parents, educators, and school principals. You know absenteeism in schools is rising. You see children struggling with breathing issues, missing out on their education and their childhood. I appeal to doctors, who witness the growing number of patients with respiratory illnesses. Pediatricians, you know how many young children are suffering from asthma and lung infections caused by polluted air,” he further added.
In his heartfelt request, he urged doctors, fitness trianers, parents, athletes & celebrities to use their power of fame and bring this very important issue to the light. Luke’s note did raise a very serious question in the mind and hearts of the readers. Is this the lifestyle we’re all working hard for? What future are we imagining if we’re accepting the bare minimum given to us by the government. Infants who still haven’t taken their first steps have polluted air in their lungs and it is depriving them of their basic rights- clean food and clean air. “Let us not wait for another crisis to act. We are with you. Let’s act together now,” Luke Concluded.
