New Delhi: Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court has postponed the verdict in an ongoing case against former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar. Now the matter will be heard on 12 February 2025. The case is related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, accused of killing father and son in Saraswati Vihar area.

Sajjan Kumar is already serving life imprisonment in another case of anti -Sikh riots in Delhi Cantt.

What is the whole matter?

The case is dated November 1, 1984, when Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh were killed in Saraswati Vihar area.

  • Charges on Sajjan Kumar:
    Advocate Anil Sharma had argued in the court that Sajjan Kumar’s name was not initially involved in the case.
  • Delay in witness statement:
    The witness took the name of Sajjan Kumar after 16 years, causing doubt in the case.
  • Appeal pending in case:
    The Delhi High Court convicted Sajjan Kumar, but the case is still pending as an appeal in the Supreme Court.

Legal arguments: Indian law vs. international law

  • Advocate Anil Sharma, while responding to the arguments made by senior advocate HS Phoolka, said that international law does not apply in this matter, but only Indian law will be valid.
  • Additional Public Prosecutor Manish Rawat said that the victim did not know the accused earlier, but later when she came to know about Sajjan Kumar’s identity, she testified against her.

Question on police investigation in Sikh riots

  • Senior advocate HS Phoolka, who is fighting the case on behalf of the riot victims, argued that the 1984 Sikh riots were rigged into police investigation.
  • He alleged that the investigation was slow and was done to save the accused.
  • He also said that this case is not just a murder, but part of a major massacre, in which 2700 Sikhs were killed in Delhi.
