Cancer isn’t just a medical condition—it’s an emotional and physical journey that impacts patients and their families. While modern treatments like chemotherapy and radiation are crucial, holistic approaches like Ayurveda offer supportive care that focuses on strengthening the body, calming the mind, and restoring balance.
This aligns with World Cancer Day 2025’s theme, “United by Unique,” which honours the individuality of each patient’s journey—something Ayurveda has emphasised for thousands of years.

“Ayurveda views every person as unique, considering their constitution (Prakriti), lifestyle, and mental state. The Vedic principle “Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah” (May all beings be happy and healthy) highlights this personalised approach, focusing on healing the entire person, not just the disease,” expresses Dr Rini Vohra Shrivastava, Scientific Advisor at Maharishi Ayurveda.
How does Ayurveda view cancer?
According to health experts in Ayurveda, cancer is not viewed as a single disease but rather as a result of imbalances within the body’s natural systems. “Ancient texts refer to Granthi (benign tumours) and Arbuda (malignant tumours). These are believed to develop due to imbalances in the Doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), weakened Agni (digestive fire), and the accumulation of Ama (toxins), which disrupt normal cell function,” Dr. Shrivastava explains.
Here are 5 ways Ayurveda supports cancer care
While Ayurveda does not claim to cure cancer, it supports modern medicine by focusing on the whole person—body, mind, and spirit. This integrated approach offers a more holistic path to healing, empowering patients to navigate their cancer journey with strength and hope.
According to Dr. Shrivastava, below are five effective ways Ayurveda may support cancer care:
Boosting immunity
Cancer treatments weaken the immune system. Ayurveda strengthens immunity with Rasayanas (rejuvenating herbs) like Ashwagandha, Amla, Guduchi, and Shatavari. Certain formulations known for their synergistic blend of herbs support white blood cell activity and cellular rejuvenation, helping the body regain strength.

Easing side effects of treatment
Common side effects like nausea, fatigue, and mouth ulcers can be managed with Ayurvedic remedies:
Ginger and Tulsi ease nausea.
Aloe Vera and Mulethi soothe mouth sores.
Ashwagandha and Brahmi combat fatigue and stress.
Managing pain and inflammation
Herbs like Turmeric (Curcumin) have potent anti-inflammatory properties. Abhyanga (Ayurvedic oil massage) helps relieve pain and improve circulation, offering comfort during treatment.

Supporting digestion and detoxification
Digestive health is key during cancer treatment. Ayurveda recommends Triphala for gentle detoxification, while Ghee and Buttermilk aid digestion and nutrient absorption. Spices like Cumin and Fennel reduce bloating and acidity.
Enhancing mental well-being:
The emotional toll of cancer is immense. Ayurveda promotes mental resilience through Pranayama (breathing exercises), yoga, and Transcendental Meditation. Herbs like Brahmi and Jatamansi help reduce anxiety and support emotional balance.
