There is a tremendous resentment among the Indian community over the incident of a Hindu student cut from a Hindu student’s wrist at Drekensburg Secondary School in Quajulu-Natal province, South Africa. Hindu organizations and social workers have described this act as insensitive and irresponsible.
Dispute over teacher’s decision
The teacher claimed that the school was not allowed to wear religious or cultural symbols in the school, so the student’s hand was cut. On this, the South African Hindu Mahasabha (SAHMS) expressed strong objections and said that this work is an insult to religious beliefs and education authorities should take immediate action on it.
Sahms said in its Sunday press statement,
“Cutting the art of Hindu student by the teacher is a symbol of intolerance. We strongly condemn this and consider it unacceptable. ”
Opposition increased on social media
After this incident, people gave sharp reactions on social media. Many users demanded the teacher’s act as hurting religious sentiments and demanded an apology from him.
A grand opening of Hindu temple in Johannesburg
Amidst the controversy, the official inauguration of Shri Swaminarayan Hindu Temple and Cultural Complex was officially inaugurated by the Bochan resident Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) in Johannesburg, South Africa.
On this occasion, the idol Pran Pratishtha was organized under the leadership of BAPS’s global spiritual guru Param Pujya Mahant Swami Maharaj. Thousands of devotees participated in this grand ceremony and the temple was established as a sacred worship place.
Waiting for further action on the matter
The Hindu community is now demanding strict action against the teacher, while the education authorities are waiting for the response.
