On the third day of the Budget Session in Lok Sabha on February 3, opposition leader Rahul Gandhi took a dig at the Modi government’s ‘Make In India’ initiative, claiming that China has a 10-year lead on India in the artificial intelligence space.

The Congress MP also argued that China’s presence in the Indian territory is due to the failure of our industrial system, which is weaker in comparison to China’s.

Claiming that the Chinese are inside our territory, Gandhi added, “The reason China is inside our territory is important because people think that wars are fought between armies and their weapons. But the fact of the matter is that wars are fought by industrial systems. The fact of the matter is that China has an industrial system that is far stronger and bigger than our system, and that is why they have the guts to come inside our country. The reason China is sitting inside this country is because Make in India has failed.”

Speaking about AI, Gandhi elaborated on how having AI on its own is completely meaningless, as it operates on top of data. “Without data, AI means nothing. And if we look at data today, there is one thing which is very clear. Every single piece of data that comes out of the production system in the world. The data that was used to make this phone, the data that is used to make electric cars,” he said.

The Congress MP further said that China has been extensively working on robots, motors, batteries, and optics for the past 10 years.

He added that while China owns almost all electronics in the world today, the consumption data is owned by the United States. “We would ensure that our banking system is not captured by 2-3 companies that basically do not allow you to build a production system. But our banking system is open, dynamic and accessible to small and medium businesses and to millions and millions of entrepreneurs who want to take part in this revolution. Our foreign policy would take into account this revolution,” he further said.
