Pune Metro’s ‘Matrushakti Nursing Pods’ To Provide Safe Space For Breastfeeding & Diaper Changing | Sourced

Breastfeeding in public places has long posed challenges for mothers due to a lack of privacy, hygiene concerns and social discomfort. Many mothers struggle to find safe and comfortable spaces to nurse their babies while travelling, often making their journeys stressful. To address this, Pune Metro has installed ‘Matrushakti Nursing Pods’ at its stations, enabling mothers to travel without worrying about breastfeeding or childcare needs. The initiative was launched on Sunday by Meghana Bordikar, Minister of State, Maharashtra Government, at the District Court Interchange Metro Station.

“These pods are air-conditioned, equipped with fans and designed to be portable. Each pod can accommodate two mothers at a time, allowing them to breastfeed their babies or change diapers. Electrical charging points are also provided for mothers who need to express milk. The pods include fire-resistant systems, diaper-changing stations, diaper disposal bins and diaper vending machines to ensure a convenient experience. For enhanced safety and privacy, the pods are fitted with safety locks. Meanwhile, plans are in place to install additional nursing pods across more metro stations soon,” stated a press release.

During the inauguration, Bordikar stated, “Pune Metro is a world-class public transport system that the city is fortunate to have. It is clean, affordable and well-maintained. By setting up these Matrushakti Nursing Pods, Pune Metro has provided an essential facility for breastfeeding mothers. Now, mothers can comfortably nurse their babies and take care of their needs while travelling, without any inconvenience.”

This initiative has been launched in collaboration with the Social Thumb Foundation. Its representatives Anushree Jawanjar, Amruta Ubale, and Amol Karambe were also present at the event.
