Spanish actress Karla Sofía Gascón gained popularity for portraying the lead role in the 2024 film Emilia Pérez alongside singer Selena Gomez. Recently, old tweets from 2020 and 2021, in which Karla expressed controversial views on Muslims, George Floyd, BTS, Adele, and diversity at the Oscars, among other topics, resurfaced, leading to immense backlash.

Later, she apologised for her controversial views and also deleted her X account. Explaining her decision, Karla told The Hollywood Reporter that she had been receiving abuse and death threats. She said, “I’m sorry, but I can no longer allow this campaign of hate and misinformation to affect neither my family nor me anymore, so at their request I am closing my account on X. I have been threatened with death, insulted, abused and harassed to the point of exhaustion. I have a wonderful daughter to protect, whom I love madly and who supports me in everything.”

She added, “I had long ago made the decision to close a social network, which has taken a terrible turn, in which I have also sometimes fallen, and for which I apologise. As part of this society, I have expressed my disagreement or agreement with all the related issues that have touched me and of which I have had an opinion, often erroneous, which has changed throughout my own experience.”

“I have always used my social media as a diary, reflections or notes, to later create stories or characters, not as something that would be scrutinized down to the last of its 140 characters, since sometimes I, myself, am not even aware of having written something negative,” she concluded.

In Karla’s old tweets, she called George Floyd a “drug addict swindler” after he was killed by a police officer in 2020. She also commented on singer Adele’s weight loss and made remarks about the physical appearances of the members of the K-pop band BTS.

Meanwhile, Karla was nominated for the 2025 Oscars for best actress, making her the first openly transgender performer to be so honoured.
