Indore (Madhya Pradesh): In yet another notable achievement, doctors of Maharaja Yeshwantrao (MY) Hospital here have performed a successful ‘awake’ craniotomy on a brain tumour patient.
‘Awake’ craniotomy is a neurosurgical procedure in which the patient remains conscious, alert and responsive. In this case too, the patient talked to the surgical team throughout the procedure. It was the first such surgery conducted in MY Hospital.
Dr Rakesh Gupta, head of the neurosurgery department, explained that a 40-year-old patient was admitted to the hospital with severe headaches and epileptic seizures.
“The MRI scan revealed that the patient had a tumour in a delicate part of the brain. We opted for ‘awake’ craniotomy to ensure that the surgery did not affect critical functions. ‘Awake’ craniotomy technique allows real-time monitoring of the patient’s brain activity,” he said.
The surgery was successful and the patient was discharged five days later. The operation was done with the support of the anesthesia team, led by Dr Manish Banjare and Dr Parul Jain, ensuring the patient remained comfortable and responsive. Neurosurgeons Dr Zafar Sheikh, Dr Yash Madnani and Dr Pratik played a key role in the procedure.
“’Awake’ craniotomy reduces the risk of damage to essential brain areas, speeds up recovery and allows immediate post-surgery interaction with family. MY Hospital’s neurosurgery department is equipped to handle complex surgeries, supported by skilled surgeons, MCh residents and physiotherapists to ensure the best post-operative care,” Dr Gupta added.
