Mumbai: Matunga’s Asthika Samaj temple will perform the Kumbhabhishekam of its idols on the morning of February 2.
The century-old temple, also called the Sri Ram Mandir, will be celebrating Maha Kumbhabishekam for its presiding deities – Lord Ganapathi, Lord Shiva, Lord Subramanya(Karthik) and Navagraha Devatas. The temple trust said that as per the shastras, Kumbhabhishekam has to be done for consecrated idols every 12 years.
Sivasri R Selvam Bhattar Kalyanasundarasivacharyar and his 50 disciples will lead the rituals. The main ritual will involve the pouring of holy water from copper pots onto the temple gopuram, the towers, and the temple deities.
“This holy water is imbued with divine energy invoked through continuous vedic chanting and performing havan,” said the temple secretary P V Ramaswamy. “The ritual is performed to re-energise the temple with and restore the sanctity of the divine space, marking a powerful spiritual rejuvenation of the temple and its deities.”
Havans or fire rituals will be performed seven days before the main ceremony, each invoking specific deities and cosmic energies. Homams during this period include Ganapathi, Rudra, Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswathi, Sri Shatru Samhara Trishati, and Navagraha homams. These fire rituals ensure the spiritual purification of the entire temple complex.
Ramaswamy said that the continuous Vedic chanting and poojas by learned scholars and priests will resonate throughout the event. The vibrations created by these sacred sounds are believed to bring positive energy, peace, and blessings to all attendees, he added. Annadhanam will also be given to all devotees daily.
