Mira-Bhayandar: Nearly 15 years after he stoned his wife to death in her sleep, the 50-year-old accused was arrested by the central crime unit (CCU) attached to the Mira Bhayandar-Vasai Virar (MBVV) police on Saturday. The accused who has been identified as Jawad Jabbar Syed (50) was nabbed from a village in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
About The Case
The gruesome killing which dates back to 24, May, 2011 was reported from a tenement in Dwarka Chawl located in the Santosh Bhawan area of Nallasopara (east). According to the police, the deceased Rehana Syed (35) had remarried with Jawad after separating with her first husband with whom she had three children including a son and two daughters.
While the daughters resided with their mother and step father, her son Mahammad Harul Anwar Khan stayed with his friends in Gala Nagar and occasionally visited his biological mother and sisters. However, the accused strongly objected to Mahammad’s visits which led to quarrels between the couple. On the fateful night, Mahammad had stayed over at her mother’s residence. The accused got into a heated argument with Rehana over the issue. After the intervention of neighbours and the children, the fight was resolved and the family went off to sleep.
At around 12:30 am, the accused took a large rock and smashed it on Rehana’s head, before fleeing from the spot. The children woke up after hearing the screams of their mother and found her lying in a pool of blood. Rehana was rushed to a nearby hospital where she succumbed to excessive bleeding due to the deep head injuries.
An offence under section 302 (murder) of the IPC was registered at the Nallasopara police station. However, the accused could not be arrested by the erstwhile investigating team. “While re-investigating cold cases (that have not yet been fully resolved) our team got crucial leads regarding Jawad’s presence at his native village near Lucknow,” said police inspector Aviraj Kurhade.
The team immediately left for Lucknow and after a month-long relentless effort finally managed to apprehend Jawad from a remote village named Naohai Khurd in Unnao district with the help of their local special task force (STF) counterparts in Lucknow. After procuring a transit remand from the local court in Lucknow, Jawad was brought back to the city, police said. Further investigations were underway.
