Uttarakhand is going to create history today. Uttarakhand is going to become the first state to implement Uniform Civil Code (UCC). This historic law will come into effect at around 12.30 pm before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Uttarakhand. According to officials, UCC will be implemented in entire Uttarakhand. This law will also be applicable to the people of Uttarakhand living outside the state.

UCC portal to be unveiled today at State Secretariat

The UCC portal will be unveiled today at the state secretariat. The program will be led by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. A day earlier (January 26), CM Dhami had said that the UCC will lay the foundation of a harmonious society free from discrimination on the basis of religion, gender, caste or community.

Preparations have been completed: CM Dhami

CM Dhami further said, ‘We are fulfilling our commitments. An example of this is the removal of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir. The state government has completed its work and preparations have been made to implement the Uniform Civil Code in the entire state from January 2025.

‘The government is going to fulfill its promise’

The Chief Minister further said, ‘Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we had promised the people of the state to bring UCC before the 2022 assembly elections. After forming the government, we did this work on priority basis. Uniform Civil Code was drafted and an Act was brought on it. Now we are going to fulfill that promise completely and formally. This will be in line with the Prime Minister’s resolve to build a united India, where there will be no discrimination against any religion, gender, caste or community.

UCC is already in force in Goa

Goa has the status of a special state in the Indian Constitution. Also, by making a law, the Parliament gave Goa the right to implement the Portuguese Civil Code. Therefore, Goa is the only state where UCC is applicable. Uttarakhand will now become the first state after independence to implement Uniform Civil Code.
