Uniform Civil Code (UCC) came into effect in Uttarakhand on Monday (January 27) and the portal for it went online shortly after state Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced media about the UCC. Uttarakhand has become first Indian state to implement a Uniform Civil Code (UCC).
Residents of Uttarakhand can now log on to ucc.uk.gov.in to avail various services prescribed by the rules in the law.
“The UCC, creating equal laws for every citizen across all religions, comes fully into effect at this moment. The credit for it goes entirely to the people of the state,” said Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Singh Dhami in a function to unveil notification of the UCC.
He added that UCC was an instrument to end discriminatory practices against women of all religions.
With UCC, Dhami has fulfilled a major poll-promise made before 2022 state polls.
Following BJP’s victory and Dhami’s appointment as CM, very first state cabinet meeting chaired by him cleared proposal of formation of expert committee to draft UCC.
The committee was constituted on May 27, 2022. It handed over the draft on February 2, 2024. Uttarakhand’s Legislative Assembly passed the law within a few days on February 7. A month later, it received President Droupadi Murmu’s assent.
