India is all set to celebrate Republic Day on 26 January 2025, marking a historic moment that commemorates the day the Constitution of India came into effect. Observed every year on the same date, Republic Day is a significant event showcasing India’s journey as a sovereign republic.
Why was 26 January chosen to celebrate Republic Day?
While India gained independence from British rule in 1947, the Constitution came into force on 26 January 1950, officially establishing the country as a republic. But why this specific date? Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru had declared India’s “Purna Swaraj” (complete independence) on 26 January 1930, during an Indian National Congress meeting. The decision to enforce the Constitution on the same date honored this historic declaration.
75th, 76th, or 77th Republic Day?
Every year, there’s a common confusion over the exact number of Republic Days India has celebrated. To clarify, the first Republic Day was observed in 1950, and the second followed in 1951. As of 2025, India has completed 75 full years as a republic (1950–2025) and is now entering its 76th year. This misunderstanding often arises due to the incorrect addition of an extra year when calculating anniversaries.
Theme and chief guest for 2025
The theme for Republic Day 2025 is “Swarnim Bharat: Virasat aur Vikas” (Golden India: Heritage and Progress). This theme emphasises India’s cultural heritage while focusing on aspirations for a progressive future. Adding to the significance, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto will grace the celebrations as the chief guest. This marks his first visit to India as president, following his assumption of office in October 2024.
The iconic Republic Day parade
The Republic Day Parade, the centerpiece of the celebrations, will showcase India’s rich cultural diversity and military strength. Starting at Rashtrapati Bhavan, the parade will move along Kartavya Path, pass India Gate, and culminate at the Red Fort. As a tribute to the nation’s fallen heroes, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will begin the day by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial.
As India celebrates another milestone in its journey as a republic, the day serves as a reminder of the nation’s heritage, progress, and aspirations for the future. From the vibrant parade to the cultural showcases, Republic Day 2025 promises to be a grand and memorable event.
