Mumbai: Mumbai witnessed its sixth organ donation this month following the contributions of two brain-dead patients in the past 24 hours. One of the donors was a 29-year-old man from Navi Mumbai, who donated his liver while being treated at Apollo Hospital in Belapur.

The second donor, Swapnil Rathod, a 34-year-old cluster manager at Swiggy from Kharghar, was admitted to Medicover Hospital, Navi Mumbai. Rathod suffered a brain hemorrhage and, despite undergoing surgery, his condition failed to improve. Doctors eventually declared him brain dead during treatment.

Following this, the medical team and members of the Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC ) informed the family about organ donation. The family agreed, and as a result, the young man’s liver and two kidneys were donated, saving the lives of three patients.

Appreciating the relatives’ decision to donate their loved one’s organ, Dr Bharat Shah, general secretary of ZTCC, expressed optimism about the cadaver donation programme in the city.

“Over the past year, we have emphasised counselling families about donating not just organs but also tissues like bones, tendons, and skin. We have started sub-committees to increase brain dead notification and encourage awareness on organ donation which is resulting in a rise in numbers now,” he said.
