New baggage policy of Air India and Indigo: The amount of air travel among the people of India has increased significantly over the last few years. The number of airlines has also increased compared to before. In 2025, airlines around the world, including the US and Europe, are introducing new rules for passengers, including India’s airlines like Air India and IndiGo. Let us know today whether the new rules related to weight limit of cabin bag and checked luggage will increase the convenience or inconvenience of the passengers?

new luggage rules

Air India will implement new cabin baggage policies from May 2, 2025 in line with Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) regulations.

cabin bag rules

Passengers on Air India domestic flights will now have to follow the following rules:

, One cabin bag measuring 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm can be carried.

Weight Limit:

, Maximum weight of cabin bag for passengers traveling in economy and premium economy: 7 kg.

, Weight limit for Business Class and First Class: 10 kg.

, Additional charges will have to be paid if the size or weight of the cabin bag increases.

This rule is a relief for those doing pre-booking.

The above changes will not be applicable to those booking Air India tickets before May 2, 2024. The weight limit for them will be as follows:

, Weight limit for economy class: 8 kg.

, Weight limit for Premium Economy Class: 10 kg.

, Weight limit for business class: 12 kg.

For this reason Air India has changed the rules

To save the loss-making Air India from sinking, Tata Group has taken it under its control. Therefore, this new change in weight limit has been implemented by Tata Group. Earlier, the weight of checked luggage in Air India was reduced from 20 kg to 15 kg.

Indigo has also changed the rules

Indigo Airlines, which provides cheap air travel to Indians, has also changed its rules in accordance with the new BCAS rules. Like Air India, its new rules will also be applicable from May 2, 2025.

, Passengers can carry one cabin bag of maximum size 55 cm x 40 cm x 20 cm.

Weight Limit:

, Weight limit for economy class: 7 kg.

, Weight limit for business class: 10 kg.

, Additional charges will have to be paid if the size or weight of the cabin bag increases.

Strict rules will affect passengers

Due to the new rules, passengers will have to be careful while packing. Otherwise be prepared to pay extra charges for extra luggage.

Airlines gave this reason behind changing the rules

Both Air India and IndiGo airlines say they want to improve the air travel habits and experience of passengers by imposing strict rules on cabin baggage. Due to strict rules, a traveler carrying a certain amount of weight from home will not need to worry and waste time removing the excess weight at the airport. If Indians make a habit of maintaining weight limit in domestic flights, it will benefit them during international travel also. This last point is fair to some extent. What do you think?
