After the poor performance of Indian batsmen in the Test series against New Zealand and Australia, BCCI made it mandatory for the players to participate in domestic cricket. The aim of this move by the board was to give more game time to the players and improve their form. Under this, big names like Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, and Shubman Gill were seen playing in the second round of Ranji Trophy.

Bad start for Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal

  • Mumbai vs Jammu and Kashmir match:
    • Captain Rohit Sharma entered the field playing a Ranji match for the first time since 2015.
    • There were a lot of expectations from the opening pair of Rohit and Yashasvi Jaiswal, but both disappointed.
    • Yashasvi Jaiswal: Got out LBW after scoring just 4 runs in 8 balls.
    • Rohit Sharma: Scored just 3 runs in 19 balls.

Shubman Gill also did not live up to expectations

  • Punjab vs Karnataka match:
    • Gill captained Punjab in this match and opened the innings.
    • However, Gill’s performance was also disappointing.
    • He scored just 4 runs in 8 balls, which included one four.

All eyes on Rishabh Pant

Now all eyes are on Rishabh Pant, who is playing for Delhi against Saurashtra. Pant’s performance could prove to be crucial for the Indian batting lineup in the Ranji Trophy.

Absence of Kohli and KL Rahul

  • Virat Kohli and KL Rahul have not participated in domestic matches yet.
    • Kohli is suffering from neck pain.
    • Rahul has an elbow injury, though both are expected to be available for the next Ranji tie starting on January 30.

Upcoming schedule and pressure

  • ODI series against England:
    • The Indian team has to play an ODI series against England from 6 February.
    • In such a situation, the third round of Ranji Trophy starting from January 30 will be the last chance for the players to prove themselves.
  • Champions Trophy:
    • The Champions Trophy is starting from 19th February, in which the Indian team will have to enter with strength.
