Mumbai: A 40-year-old job aspirant lost Rs 5.29 lakh after falling prey to the prepaid task fraud.

According to the police, the Jalgaon resident was looking for employment and had also uploaded her job profile on Instagram, Telegram and a job search site. On January 6, she received a Telegram message from a woman, who posed as a recruiter.

The scammer offered a work from home opportunity to the complainant, said the police. Initially, she was asked to give online ratings to hotels and even got Rs 1,713, the police added.

Next, the fraudsters induced her to opt for prepaid tasks and made her pay Rs 5.29 lakh between January 9 and 14. When the demand for money kept increasing, the woman realised that she had been scammed.
