In Hindu religion, Amavasya date is considered important for bathing and charity activities. Amavasya date of every month is known by different names. The Amavasya date of Krishna Paksha of Magh month is called Mauni Amavasya, which is the first Amavasya of the year 2025. According to Drik Panchang, Mauni Amavasya will be celebrated on 29 January 2025. Taking bath in river Ganga on this day is considered virtuous.

Maha Kumbh is being organized in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh after 144 years, and the second Amrit Snan will be held on the day of Mauni Amavasya, 29 January 2025. It is believed that taking bath in nectar in Mahakumbh frees one from all sins.

When is Mauni Amavasya 2025?

According to Drik Panchang, the Amavasya Tithi of Krishna Paksha of Magha month will start at 07:35 PM on 28 January 2025 and will end at 06:05 PM the next day on 29 January 2025. Therefore, as per Udayatithi, Mauni Amavasya will be celebrated on 29 January 2025.

Bathing time:

On the day of Mauni Amavasya, Brahma Muhurta for bathing in the holy river will be from 05:25 am to 06:18 am. Siddhi Yoga is also being formed on this day till 09:22 pm, which is considered best for auspicious works.

Importance of Mauni Amavasya:

According to religious beliefs, taking bath in river Ganga or any other holy river on the day of Mauni Amavasya erases all sins and attains salvation. On this day, Shraddha, water offering and Pind Daan are also performed for the peace of the ancestors. It is believed that on this day, by doing charitable works and feeding food to Brahmins and the poor, the ancestors are pleased. A fast of silence is also observed on Mauni Amavasya, because it is said that on this day the ancestors come to meet their descendants. Therefore, the acts of Shraddha, Tarpan and Pind Daan maintain the blessings of the ancestors on the family members.
