A 22-year-old grandson has been arrested by Khalapur police for murdering his grandmother with the intention of robbing her jewelry, which he planned to use to release his mortgaged motorcycle. The crime happened in the early hours of 17th January at Madap Katkarwadi, Khalapur.
The accused has been identified as Sumit Kashinath Katkari (22). According to the police, the body of the elderly woman was found on 18th January, a day after the murder. She was found lying on her bed in a pool of blood. The Khalapur police team, led by Police Inspector Sachin Pawar, arrived at the scene for investigations and punchnama.
The team found that the woman had been attacked with a weapon on her head, forehead, and nose, leading to her death. A case of murder was filed under section 103(1) of BNS with Khalapur police. Initial investigations did not yield any immediate suspects. However, a breakthrough came when police discovered that the victim used to wear gold jewelry which were however missing.
The police suspected that the murder was committed with the intention of robbery In further interrogation of the family members, police found about the financial mess the accused was in and about his mortgaged bike. “Katkari, had pledged his motorcycle for Rs 15,000 but had failed to inform his father. Under pressure from repeated questioning by his father, the accused decided to steal his grandmother’s jewelry to recover the money.
He took advantage of the fact that his grandmother, Radhabai, lived alone and attacked her during the night, killing her before stealing her gold ornaments,” a police officer from Khalapur police station said.Katkari was arrested after confessing to the crime. In addition to the murder charge, he has been booked for robbery as well.
