The reason for the mysterious deaths happening in the last few days in Badhal village of Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir seems to be coming to light. Initial investigations indicate that pesticide contamination may be behind these deaths. Residues of pesticide have been found in a “Baoli” (natural water source) of the village. The local administration has confirmed that those who died had consumed water from this stepwell.

17 deaths in the same village, 14 children included

So far 17 people have died in Badhal village of Rajouri district, which includes 14 children. This incident has spread sensation in the entire area. The deceased belonged to three families.

Initial investigation indicates pesticide

Preliminary investigation conducted by experts found that pesticide residues were present in the water of the stepwell. According to the Indian Express, it is suspected that all the victims drank contaminated water from the same stepwell. However, authorities have not yet established a direct link between the polluted water and the deaths, and the case remains under investigation.

Pollution or infection: expert opinion

Experts believe that these deaths could also be due to virus or bacterial infection. However, it is not appropriate to call the deaths “mysterious” as the evidence so far points towards polluted water.

Bawali sealed, central team engaged in investigation

Considering the seriousness of the incident, the local administration has immediately sealed the stepwell. Union Home Minister Amit Shah has formed an inter-ministerial team to investigate the matter. This team is visiting Badhal village, located about 55 kilometers from Rajouri.
