Mumbai: The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) aims to inaugurate the remaining section of the Hinduhrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg (HBTMSM) by March 2025. This decision emerged from a recent project review meeting led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and senior MSRDC officials.

“During the review, the Chief Minister emphasized accelerating the expansion of the Samruddhi Expressway linking Mumbai and Nagpur,” a senior MSRDC official revealed adding, “The CM directed that the final stretch be completed soon to improve connectivity between these two cities.”

The 701-kilometer expressway, envisioned during Fadnavis’ first term, promises to significantly reduce travel time while boosting Maharashtra’s socio-economic growth. The first segment, stretching 625 kilometers from Nagpur to Shirdi, was inaugurated in December 2022. A second section, from Shirdi to Bharvir (105 kilometers), opened in May 2023.

However, a key 4.5-kilometer link between Amane and the Shangri La Resort on the old Mumbai-Nashik Highway remains under construction. This segment, part of the Vadodara-Mumbai Expressway, is expected to be ready by November. Officials highlight its importance for seamless connectivity ahead of the final Samruddhi Mahamarg opening.

MSRDC also plans to enhance commuter convenience with 10 public utility areas featuring petrol pumps, eateries, and rest stops. Designed for speeds of up to 150 kmph, the expressway boasts advanced infrastructure, including wildlife underpasses, flyovers, and pedestrian crossings.

Adding a cultural touch, MSRDC has adorned the tunnels connecting Thane and Nashik districts with Warli art, showcasing Maharashtra’s rich heritage. This is the first time in the state that tunnels have been transformed into vibrant displays of folk art.

“Warli art, a symbol of Thane’s cultural legacy, decorates the Kasara tunnel,” said Dr. Anilkumar Gaikwad, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of MSRDC. “Igatpuri’s tunnels feature themes of Vipassana meditation and tourism, while depictions of farming and livelihoods appear in other sections. This initiative combines cultural preservation with driver engagement.”

By integrating traditional art into modern infrastructure, MSRDC aims to enhance the travel experience while preserving regional identity. The Samruddhi Mahamarg stands as a testament to innovative engineering and cultural appreciation, promising both economic growth and aesthetic delight for commuters.
