BCCI on Saturday announced the Indian team for the Champions Trophy to be held in Pakistan and UAE. Suryakumar Yadav and fast bowler Mohammad Siraj have not been included in this team. Rohit Sharma has been appointed as the captain of the team, while young batsman Shubman Gill has been made the vice-captain. Former cricketer Suresh Raina has called this decision far-sighted.

Raina said, “Gill has got this opportunity of vice-captaincy at the right time. He is the next superstar of Indian cricket and his performance in ODIs has impressed everyone. Rohit knows how to groom a young player and Gill can play a special role for the team.”

India has won the Champions Trophy twice so far. Had the distinction of becoming joint winners with Sri Lanka for the first time in 2002 and captured this prestigious trophy for the second time in 2013. Raina believes that the team led by Rohit Sharma has the potential to become champion.

He said, “Rohit’s team has the ability to win. The most important thing is to have the right composition of the team. The Dubai pitch will be a little slow, but our team is capable of winning in any condition.”
