After the fall of Sheikh Hasina government, the government led by interim Prime Minister Mohammad Yunus in Bangladesh has taken steps towards a new beginning in relations with Pakistan. Diplomatic and defense cooperation between the two countries has gained momentum in recent weeks.
New dimension to bilateral cooperation
It was agreed to strengthen bilateral relations during the visit of Bangladesh Lieutenant General SM Kamrul Hasan to Pakistan. Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar described Bangladesh as a “lost brother” and assured all possible cooperation. The meeting between Prime Minister Yunus and Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif during the D-8 summit further deepened this new friendship.
Restoration of direct sea connectivity after 50 years
Maritime connectivity between Bangladesh and Pakistan has been restored for the first time since the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971. A cargo ship from Karachi reached Chittagong port, marking the beginning of a new phase of trade relations. Along with this, restrictions related to cargo inspection with Pakistan have also been lifted.
