A sessions court in Sealdah, Kolkata has convicted Sanjay Roy, the main accused in the rape and murder case of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College. The case sparked outrage across the country and led to several protests in Kolkata, mainly involving doctors and medical staff. Sealdah Court’s Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das pronounced the verdict 57 days after the trial began.
“You must be punished,” the judge said in his remarks.
Sanjay Roy was convicted under sections 64 (punishment for rape), 66 (death penalty) and 103 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (BNS). Sealdah Court’s Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das delivered the verdict 57 days after the trial began. While convicting Sanjay Roy, the judge said in his remarks, ‘You must be punished.’

Sanjay asked the judge, ‘Why were the other people who implicated me released?’ In response, Justice Anirban Das said, ‘I have carefully examined all the evidence and heard the witnesses and also heard the arguments during the hearing. After seeing all this I found you guilty. You are guilty and must be punished. The court will announce Sanjay Roy’s punishment on January 20. Till then he has been sent to judicial custody.
The body of a female trainee doctor was found in a semi-nude state.
Last year, on August 9, a semi-nude body of a female trainee doctor was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Hospital. Kolkata Police arrested citizen volunteer Sanjay Roy on the basis of CCTV footage and evidence recovered from the crime scene. On the orders of Kolkata High Court, CBI took the case into its hands and started investigation. The Central Investigation Agency has also made Sanjay Roy the main accused in its charge sheet and has demanded death penalty for him in the court.
