Sakat Chauth fast is observed on the Chaturthi date of Krishna Paksha of Magh month, which is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. Mothers observe fast on this day for the happiness and well-being of their children. This year the fast of Sakat Chauth will be observed on 17 January 2025. On this day, mothers observe Nirjala fast and break their fast in the evening by looking at the moon. Moon worship has special significance in this fast, and Tilakuta made from sesame seeds is also offered to Lord Ganesha, hence it is also called Tilakuta Chauth.
Story of Sakat Chauth:
Once upon a time, there lived a poor sister-in-law and a rich sister-in-law in a city. Sister-in-law’s husband used to cut wood from the forest and sell it, and she had to work at her sister-in-law’s house to support the family. Sister-in-law always worshiped Lord Ganesha. After observing the fast of Sakat Chauth in the month of Magh, he made Tilkut from sesame seeds and jaggery, because he had no money. She performed puja and resolved to break her fast by offering Arghya to the moon in the evening.
In the evening, when the sister-in-law prepared food at the sister-in-law’s house, no one ate the food because of the sister-in-law’s fast. When the sister-in-law asked the sister-in-law for food, she said that no one had eaten food today, so she could not give it to you. Due to this the sister-in-law became very sad and returned home hungry. His children were also hungry at home, and when they realized that they could not get anything, they started crying. The sister-in-law fell asleep remembering Lord Ganesha.
That night Sakat Mata came in the form of an old woman in the sister-in-law’s dream and asked for food. Sister-in-law said that she has nothing but Pooja’s leftover Tilkut. Sakat Mata ate Tilkut and then said that she had to settle down. The sister-in-law told them to settle it wherever they wanted. In the morning the sister-in-law saw that her entire house was full of diamonds and pearls.
When the sister-in-law heard that her sister-in-law’s house had become so blessed, she also thought of doing the same. He also made Tilkut on the day of Sakat Chauth, but when he invited Sakat Mata in his dream, Sakat Mata left bad smell and filth in his palace.
