Navi Mumbai: A 55-year-old man suffering from Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) has successfully undergone a complex emergency nephrectomy to remove a massive 35 cm kidney mass at Medicover Hospital, Navi Mumbai. The intricate surgery was led by Dr. Vikas Bhise, Consultant Urologist at the hospital, and marks a significant medical achievement.

The patient, Mahesh Yadav (name changed), had been on dialysis for several years due to ADPKD, a genetic disorder that leads to the formation of fluid-filled cysts in the kidneys, ultimately causing kidney failure.

For years, Yadav had been under the care of Dr. Amit Nagrik, Senior Nephrologist at Medicover Hospital, in preparation for a kidney transplant. His daily life had become increasingly difficult, as he relied heavily on his family for support with even the simplest tasks, while enduring pain and discomfort.

When Yadav arrived at the emergency department, he was in critical condition, experiencing severe abdominal pain and significant blood loss from his urine. Dr. Bhise explained, “The patient’s condition was dire. He was in hypotension and had already lost a lot of blood. In ADPKD, the kidney is replaced by fluid-filled cysts, and it’s quite rare to see such a large mass. His abdomen had become severely distended, and the pain had worsened. Once the bleeding started, he knew his condition had become life-threatening.”

Given the size of the mass and the complexity of the case, the surgical team opted for an open approach to remove the kidney. Dr. Bhise added, “The mass was 35 cm in size, and the entire abdomen was tense due to the cysts. The normal anatomy of the abdomen had been lost, making the surgery even more challenging. Fortunately, the surgery was completed in two hours with minimal blood loss, and the patient did not require a transfusion.”

Yadav was discharged just three days after the surgery and was mobilized the very next day. He is now on the road to recovery, with a significantly improved quality of life.

Reflecting on his journey, Yadav shared, “I had been living in pain for years, and the thought of not being able to live a normal life was overwhelming. When the bleeding began, I was terrified. But now, I can live a normal life again, and I’m filled with gratitude.”

Dr. Bhise emphasized that timely intervention was crucial to prevent life-threatening complications such as shock and severe blood loss. He expressed immense satisfaction in seeing Yadav’s recovery, stating, “It’s immensely gratifying to see him recover so well. He’s now back to his daily routine and enjoying a much better quality of life.”
