Chandigarh: Stepping up their stir against the Centre to press for their demands including minimum support price (MSP) and debt waiver, a group of 111 farmers began their fast-unto-death to express their solidarity with the farm leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal whose fast-unto-death on Wednesday entered 51st day at Khanauri border.
Even as heavy police has been deployed at the Khanauri border, the group of 111 farmers who wore black clothes began their fast-unto-death sitting near the police barricades on Haryana side. Even though Haryana police objected to it, the farmers said that they would stage the sit-in there and would not march ahead.
Meanwhile, the doctors attending on Dallewal, about 70, who is also a cancer patient, said that his health continued to deteriorate.
It may be recalled that a large number of farmers have been camping at Shambhu and Khanauri borders of Punjab and Haryana and protesting under the aegis of Samyukta Kisan Morcha (non-political) and the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM) since February 13, 2024, to press the Centre for their demands including minimum support price and debt waive.
The farmers had also repeatedly attempted to take out their “Delhi chalo’’ foot-march towards Delhi but were stopped by the Haryana police by lobbing teargas shells and using water cannons which left several farmers injured.
