Even 10 days after the Indian team’s defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, the discussion continues. India faced a 3-1 defeat after winning the first match of the five-match series. After this defeat, BCCI held a review meeting and the possibility of changes in the rules related to the team also came up. Meanwhile, former great batsman Sunil Gavaskar has given an important message to the BCCI that some tough decisions need to be taken to bring the Indian team back to a strong position.

Gavaskar wrote in his column, “There has been a dullness in Indian cricket due to losing two consecutive Test series. The excitement that is there in anticipation of a new series is no longer visible. The apathy that was there on the field has reached the fans. Indian cricket needs a new challenge, and when new administrators come in, it will be interesting to see how they face this challenge.”

He further said, “The first decision in this situation is that we have to take a long-term approach. The next few months are going to revolve around limited overs cricket and IPL. “We should not ignore the shortcomings of Test cricket, especially as the five-Test series against England begins for the World Test Championship final.”

Gavaskar suggested to avoid repeating the mistakes made during the Australia tour. He said, “The team should reach England in one group and not in four batches. The team was without captain, vice-captain and coach for the first two days in Australia. This sends a wrong message to the home team. BCCI should ensure that this does not happen again.”

He also stressed the need to play practice matches in England. Gavaskar said, “Now that India has not qualified for the WTC final, the team has the opportunity to play practice matches. In English conditions the ball swings in the air and seams on the pitch. There is a difference in the mental preparation of both practicing at the net and scoring runs in the match. Practice matches are very important to build confidence.”
