Indore (Madhya Pradesh): Every year on January 15, the Catholic Church honours St Arnold Janssen, founder of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) and two congregations. This year celebrates 150 years of his vision spreading across 80 countries.

St Arnold, a German priest and educator, founded his first congregation in 1875 to serve humanity and proclaim Jesus Christ’s message. In India, this vision took root in 1932 when the Society of the Divine Word (SVD) began its work in Indore, transforming lives through education, healthcare, and social service.

Institutions like St Arnold’s School and St Raphael’s School have educated nearly two million students, fostering academic excellence and moral values. Healthcare contributions include St Patrick’s Dental Clinic, which provides affordable care. The Society’s initiatives, like Janvikas and Vishwas Societies, empower marginalised groups, offering vocational training and support to women, children and daily labourers.

Media contributions through Satprakashan Sanchar Kendra and interfaith efforts through Masih Vidya Bhavan have also been impactful. Beyond Indore, the mission expanded to underserved communities in Jhabua, Khandwa, Dhar and Gujarat, addressing education, healthcare and environmental issues. St Arnold’s legacy remains a testament to faith, compassion and service, inspiring generations worldwide.
