Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Out of 337 MT Union Carbide Corporation (UCC) chemical waste sent to Pithampur for incineration, around 162 MT is just soil, says a report of the State government. As per the report, the total waste collected from defunct UCC premises constitutes 162 MT soil, while other components include 29 MT reactor residue, 92MT Sevin residue and the semi processed residue is around 54 MT.

The waste also comprises Naphthol residues. Half-life (shelf life) of Naphthol and Sevin is 5 years, and by now eight half-life of the two compounds is completed, the report states. Complying with the High Court order dated December 3, 2024, Bhopal Gas Tragedy Relief and Rehabilitation Department (BGTRRD) transported 337 MT to REEL, Pithampur on January 1, 2025.

Govt approaching people

HC has given six-week to the state government for confidence building and dispelling myths about incineration of UCC waste in Pithampur. The government is approaching the public through industries as most of the people of the region are factory workers in the industrial town Pithampur to dispel myths about air and water pollution because of disposing of UCC waste in the area. 

Sandeep Yadav, Principal secretary, gas relief department says

“Government is working towards confidence building and dispelling myths among masses about incineration of UCC waste in a very systematic manner. Officials of MP Pollution Control Board and officials of other departments are engaging with people and industry management.”
