After the Indian team’s poor performance in the five-match Test series on Australia tour, there is speculation about the future of captain Rohit Sharma and experienced batsman Virat Kohli. However, former India captain and great all-rounder Kapil Dev said that both the players are so big that they should take decisions about their future on their own.
On the Australia tour, Kohli scored only 190 runs in nine innings with one century, while captain Rohit Sharma had a worse performance, scoring just 31 runs in five innings of three matches. Rohit had to be ruled out of the fifth test match due to poor form.
Kapil Dev said, “Virat and Rohit are very big players and let them decide their own future.” When he was asked who could be a contender to become the captain of the team in place of Rohit, he said, “There should not be any kind of controversy in this. The current captain also came in someone’s place. The captain should get full time.”
The Indian team was disappointed with both the batsmen and bowlers on this tour. Apart from Jasprit Bumrah, no other bowler failed to make an impact. Bumrah bowled 150 overs on this tour and took 32 wickets, but due to injury he could not bowl the second innings in the fifth Test. India suffered a 1-3 defeat on this tour.
Kapil did not think it right to compare his bowling with the current bowlers. He said, “It is not right to make comparisons in sports. Players from two different eras should not be compared. In today’s era, players score 300 runs in a day, but in our times this did not happen.”
On not including aggressive batsmen like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant in India’s T20 squad for the upcoming limited overs series against England, Kapil said, “I don’t want to say anything about others’ decision. The selectors have selected the team thoughtfully. I don’t want to criticize.”
