On December 3, 2024, Yoon Suk Yeol stunned South Korea and the world by declaring that a martial law was being imposed in the country. After initial confusion, things started moving and security forces were mobilised to secure the parliament.
Some of the security official clashed with lawmakers while trying to force their way into the parliament. The lawmakers later bolted the doors of parliament later and rapidly passed a resolution against imposition of the martial law.
Yoon Suk Yeol lost face as martial law imposition exercise failed. Within a few hours, President Yoon was forced to come on camera and apologise to the nation.
The parliament later impeached Yoon. Later, the lawmakers removed Yoon’s successor as well. The political instability Yoon’s failed attempt of imposing martial law has persisted even till today.
Following his impeachment, Yoon has fought a legal battle against bids of parliament and other institutions to arrest and investigate him. He faces charges of insurrection and abuse of power.
