In a significant breakthrough, the Mumbai Crime Branch’s Unit 3 has arrested Dilip Wagaskar, deputy coordinator of the Byculla assembly constituency from the Shiv Sena (Shinde) faction in connection with the murder of NCP taluka president Sachin Kurmi.
It is the fifth arrest in the case, with action taken under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).
According to officials, Wagaskar is accused of participating in the conspiracy that led to Kurmi’s brutal murder. He has been remanded to police custody until January 16.
Kurmi was gruesomely killed on October 4 near his residence in Ghodapdeo, with initial investigations pointing to a dispute over financial dealings as the motive behind the murder.
Earlier, Govind Yadav, a SIM card supplier, was arrested from Bandra in connection with the case. Yadav is accused of providing SIM cards to the three primary suspects already in custody: Anand Kale (alias Anya), Vijay Kakade (alias Papya) and Praful Patkar.
Kurmi, who owned a salon business and lived in Byculla, was attacked by three men on a motorcycle near his home.
According to investigators, the motive behind the killing appears to be linked to a financial dispute. However, Kurmi’s family continues to demand further arrests, claiming that other gang members who had previously issued threats and assaulted Kurmi are still at large.
