Coldwave grips Mumbai as temperatures dip to 14°C, with hazy skies expected throughout the week | Representational Image
Mumbai: Mumbaikars need to brace for more chills as the city is likely to witness another coldwave of the season this week. On Monday the island city saw a massive drop of 6 degrees Celsius in the maximum temperature recorded in just three days.
The Santacruz observatory recorded a maximum of 30.3 degrees Celsius on Monday, January 6, which was 36 degrees Celsius on January 4. While, the minimum temperature was 16.8 degrees Celsius, which was 19 degrees Celsius the day before.
The minimum temperature in the city on Tuesday is likely to be 14 degrees Celsius and the maximum at 31 degrees Celsius, the IMD Mumbai’s Santacruz observatory weather report says. As per its weekly forecast, from January 7 to January 12, the minimum temperature will range between 14 to 18 degrees Celsius and the maximum temperature will be in the range between 31 to 33 degrees Celsius. The sky will be mainly clear, however later in the week the skies in Mumbai are likely to be hazy and foggy.
As per IMD, the disturbances in the westerly winds and strong northern winds are leading to sudden weather changes in Mumbai. The island city also witnessed light rain spells at isolated locations on Sunday evening, adding the coolness in the breeze.
The air quality index (AQI) in Mumbai which was consistently under the ‘Poor to Very Poor’ category last month, has improved slightly with the strong winds. The AQI on Monday was ‘Moderate’ (128) as per the Central Pollution Control Board.
Some of the areas with the poorest AQI as of Monday evening were: Shivaji Nagar (232), Ghatkopar (195), Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport T2 (136), Sewri (130), Borivali East (125), BKC (128), Malad West (128), Worli (122).
