The Tamil action thriller Maharaja, starring Vijay Sethupathi, was released in June 2024 and received widespread acclaim from the audience, particularly for Sethupathi’s stellar performance. In November last year, the action thriller was released in Chinese cinemas.
Now, a video circulating on social media shows the Chinese audience getting emotional while watching Maharaja in the theatre, quickly going viral. Maharaja revolves around the father-daughter bond, had the audience wiping away tears as the emotional plot unfolded on screen.
The clip was shared by the account Gabbar Singh on X, with the caption, “Somehow Father-daughter Indian movies do really well in China. Dangal, Singing Superstar and now Maharaja.”

Maharaja has become the highest-grossing Indian movie in China in five years and is approaching the Rs 100 crore mark. Yu Jing, spokesperson for the Chinese Embassy in India, took to her X handle to share an update on Maharaja’s box office success in China. She posted a film poster with the caption, “Maharaja has become the highest-grossing Indian film in China since 2018, reaching Rs 91.55 crore. Well done.”

Apart from Sethupathi’s Maharaja, other Indian films like Khan’s Dangal and Secret Superstar, Ayushmann Khurrana’s Andhadhun and Rani Mukerji’s Hichki, have also performed well in China.
Earlier, addressing the media at the success meet, Sethupathi said in Kerala, “We thought the movie would have a good run in Tamil Nadu. But we’re extremely happy with the overwhelming response it got outside the state. People are showering love on every actor and technician who worked on the film. I don’t know what to say!”
Directed by Nithilan Saminathan. The film also starred Vijay Sethupathi Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas, Natty Subramaniam, Abhirami Gopikumar, Divyabharathi, Singampuli, Aruldoss, Munishkanth, Sachana Namidass, Manikandan and Bharathiraja.
