Abujhmaad (Chhattisgarh): In a major operation against Naxalites, security forces eliminated at least four insurgents in Chhattisgarh’s Abujhmaad region on Saturday evening. However, the operation claimed the life of a District Reserve Guard (DRG) head constable, identified as Sannu Karam, officials confirmed.

The joint anti-Naxal operation involved police teams and DRGs from Narayanpur, Dantewada, Jagdalpur and Kondagaon districts, along with the Special Task Force (STF). Security personnel recovered automatic weapons, including AK-47 rifles and self-loading rifles (SLR), from the scene.

Details On The Encounter

The gunfight erupted in the densely forested Abujhmaad region, a notorious Naxal stronghold bordering Narayanpur and Dantewada districts. According to police, intermittent encounters between security forces and Naxalites had been ongoing since Friday evening, culminating in Saturday’s deadly clash.

Abujhmaad, an area larger than Goa and known for its rugged terrain and unsurveyed land, has served as a safe haven for Naxals since the 1980s. Despite its challenging geography, security forces have intensified operations in recent years, aiming to dismantle Naxal dominance in the region.

Abujhmaad’s Connection With Naxalites

According to an India Today report citing police data, nearly 100 Naxalites were eliminated in Abujhmaad in 2024, accounting for over 50% of all Naxals killed in the state during the year. Notably, an operation in October 2024 resulted in the elimination of 31 Naxals, marking one of the largest counter-insurgency operations in Chhattisgarh.

Last year, security forces claimed to have made major inroads, covering more than 50% of Abujhmaad and striking at the heart of Naxalite operations. Officials said these operations have dealt a significant blow to the Naxal movement, which has long used Abujhmaad as a base for organizing and planning activities.
