Aa the panic about HMPV outbreak spreads panic around the world, China minimized worries regarding an alleged flu outbreak, explaining that the increase in respiratory infections is due to a normal seasonal spike during winter.

Although videos on social media depict overcrowded hospitals, Chinese officials insisted that the situation does not signify a major health crisis. The Chinese foreign ministry stated that the outbreak is not as severe as the previous year, responding to inquiries regarding the transmission of influenza A and other respiratory illnesses.

“Respiratory infections tend to peak during the winter season in the northern hemisphere,” said Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Chinese foreign ministry.

According a report by Time Of India, Chinese foreign ministry added, “The diseases appear to be less severe and spread on a smaller scale compared to the previous year. I can assure you the Chinese government cares about the health of Chinese citizens and foreigners in China. It is safe to travel in China.”

Mao also highlighted the guidelines released by the National Disease Control and Prevention Administration of China for handling respiratory illnesses in the winter.

The health ministry announced on Friday that it is vigilantly observing the situation in China, particularly in relation to the reported outbreak of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV).

‘No Reason to Worry’ Health Ministry States

Atul Goel, Director General of Health Services (DGHS) in India, said, “There is news doing the rounds about a Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) outbreak in China. However, we have analyzed the data of the respiratory outbreaks in the country [India], and there is no substantial increase in December 2024 data nor any large-scale cases reported from our institutions. There is nothing to be alarmed about the present situation.” According to report by Times Of India.

Goel mentioned that Indian hospitals are equipped with sufficient beds and supplies for the typical seasonal increase in respiratory infections. He recommended that the public take standard precautions, including avoiding close contact if feeling symptoms like a cough or cold, to stop the spread.

Reports originating from China indicate that Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) may be the cause of the rise in infections. Nonetheless, neither Chinese authorities nor the World Health Organization (WHO) has announced any emergency situation.

What is Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV)?

Identified in 2001, HMPV belongs to the Pneumoviridae family, which encompasses the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), as stated by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The virus typically leads to infections in the upper and lower respiratory tracts, showing signs akin to those of the common cold or influenza.

Although it is under careful observation, health professionals emphasize that its effects are still manageable with typical medical procedures.
